Your words are powerful! They have the potential to build someone up, or tear someone down. In this blog you will find 5 Bible verses that will help you tame your tongue.

Looking back, when I was younger I always admired those who were quick witted. Being that I was shy and quiet, I could never think of anything clever to say on the spot. It was always long after an argument was over that my creative responses would flow. So, seeing those who always had the perfect response in the moment made me jealous. I wanted to be them, they always had the upper hand. Embarrassed to admit it, I would practice numerous fake scenarios in my head, planning my responses ahead of time. Just in case the opportunity came, I would be ready. Practice made perfect, and eventually quick comebacks flowed naturally.

Now that I am older and hopefully wiser, I can see that having that quick wit is a double edge sword that undoubtedly has the potential to cause catastrophic damage to my most cherished relationship, my marriage. Having the last word, or winning arguments was no longer important. Loving my husband and protecting our marriage became my number one priority. I valued my relationship with him more than my ego.

Thankfully there is no problem God can’t fix and the Bible has so much to say about the tongue, and if you struggle controlling it sometimes like I do, I really recommend that you dive into the Bible and read what all it has to say about it.

5 BIBLE VERSES THAT WILL HELP CONTROL YOUR MOUTH:

  1. Proverbs 15:1 - "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

  2. Proverbs 15:4 - "The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit."

  3. Ephesians 4:29 - "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

  4. Proverbs 21:23 - "Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity."

  5. Proverbs 12:18 - "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

Pick one the above Bible verses and memorize it, and in the heat of the moment when you feel like your tongue might get the better of you, recite the Bible verse in your head. I can speak from experience that this technique has helped me keep my mouth shut many times.

Fully listen to what your spouse is saying. Communication is more than the words we share, it’s a telltale sign of what’s going on in our hearts. In Luke 6:45 it says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Be patient with yourself, change doesn’t happen over night. There will be times when you mess up and say something you didn’t mean. When that happens, be quick to apologize! Remember the goal is reconciliation and not simply being right.
